Simak, Clifford. A Heritage of Stars. (c) 1977. New York: Berkley (publ.) / Putnam (dist.), n.d. "Published simultaneously in Canada by Longman Canada Limited, Toronto." [S. F.] Book Club Edition.

In a low-tech far-future America, a professor at the last university quests for the launching point of humanity to the stars. Among his companions is Rollo, a robot who has overcome his nonviolent programming sufficiently to kill grizly bears. At the end of the quest is a high-tech city and a computer (slowly declining into senility) that still preserves a hope for humanity's return to technological greatness.
