In a low-tech far-future America, a professor at the last university quests for the launching point of humanity to the stars. Among his companions is Rollo, a robot who has overcome his nonviolent programming sufficiently to kill grizly bears. At the end of the quest is a high-tech city and a computer (slowly declining into senility) that still preserves a hope for humanity's return to technological greatness.
