Lee, Tanith. "A Madonna of the Machine." In 1989 Annual World's Best SF (q.v. under Anthologies).

In effect, a New Wave reconsideration of E. M. Forster's "The Machine Stops" (q.v.). One of the manual laborers bred to care for the Machine has a vision of a beautiful woman who does not fit in with the grayness of the Machine world. Soon others experience the vision, and the story ends optimistically, promising change.
