CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND. Steven Spielberg, dir., script. USA: Columbia/EMI, 1977. 135 min. in original theatrical release.

Heavily emphasizes everyday machines. The mechanized environment of the alien mothership at the end of the film is a highly positive, almost mystical, experience for the film's hero, and for the audience, esp. in the "Special Edition" rerelease (1980) and in the version shown on television. See under Drama Criticism the TMG[1] essay by D. Palumbo. Discussed by V. Sobchack in Screening Space[2] (see Sobchack's Index for Chapter 4).
