COPPÉLIA.

E.T.A. Hoffmann's "The Sandman" (1816, listed under Fiction) tells the story of a Dr. Coppelius, who builds a beautiful automaton—a doll that inspires the love of the hero of "The Sandman." The story of a dancing doll who comes to life and becomes a woman has also inspired an opera, a ballet, and, from them, several films. As of 2014, the Wiki lists three filmed ballets; for other cinema works, see Walt Lee[1], COPPELIA, and cross-listings. (See in the Wiki, L. Delibes, [see also MAKING MR. RIGHT].)

For the opera, see La poupée entry, and note that the Italian/French film LA POUPÉE (1962) is very much a variation on this theme.
