COPPÉLIA.

E.T.A. Hoffmann's "The Sandman" (1816, listed under Fiction) tells the story of a Dr. Coppelius, who builds a beautiful automaton—a doll that inspires the love of the hero of "The Sandman." The story of a dancing doll who comes to life and becomes a woman has also inspired an opera, a ballet, and, from them, several films.
