Doctor Who: "Slipback"
Doctor Who: "Slipback." Audiotape. BBC Audio Collection, under lease to The Mind's Eye, 1989. ISBN 1-55935-031-8. Ca. 60 min. Colin Baker, star. Eric Saywood <sp?>, script. Paul Spencer <sp?>, prod.
Backpanel of Mind's Eye cassette container states that "Slipback" was "the only Dr. Who story specially written for radio with Colin Baker as the Doctor." "Slipback" is a time-paradox story where the Big Bang creation of the universe depends upon a spaceship hurtling back to the beginning of time. Relevant here, the spaceship is under the control of a female gendered computer, literally of two minds about taking over the galaxy. The portion of the AI that wants total power (to do good, of course) has the voice of a mature, assertive woman; the portion of the AI that finally resists the impulse for computer takeover has the voice of a girl or the "Born Yesterday" stereotypical blond. Note also a robot with the voice of a well-trained butler, or of an announcer on the BBC Home Service, ca. 1944.
