Ferguson, Kathy E., Gilad Ashkenazi, and Wendy Schultz. "Gender Identity in Star Trek." In Political Science Fiction. Donald M. Hassler and Clyde Wilcox, eds. Columbia, SC: U of South Carolina P, 1997. Ch. 13.

Starts with the premise that "Identity is about boundaries," with one of the boundaries investigated human/machine. While Star Trek: The Next Generation "seems to be on hold when it comes to race . . . . the boundary between human and machine is frequently challenged" (221)—as with Mr. Data; note also comments on the Binars of Star Trek: The Next Generation, "11001001" (227).
