STRANGELOVE—and more subtle sexual images in films such as 2001, STAR WARS [I] (A NEW HOPE), and CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND. In the latter group, the hero becomes "the successful sperm-figure" moving "toward its rendezvous with the mechanical egg" (122-23 and passim).
