See for "general-purpose exploration module," usually called "the GPEM suit": "a roughly man-shaped machine that could keep a hardy person alive for as long as a month in the middle of a blast furnace or swaddled in liquid oxygen" (Avon edn. 21), and which can be turned into a fighting suit (cf. R. Heinlein's Starship Troopers and JH's Forever War).
