Gunn, James. "On the Foundations of Science Fiction." Isaac Asimov's Science Fiction Magazine #4, April 1980: 64-84. Rpt. with slight changes in Gunn's Isaac Asimov, q.v.

Significant here for seeing "the expansion of humanity into the galaxy" (as opposed to confinement) as, in Jack Williamson's words, "the central myth" of S.F.'s vision of the future. Also significant for finding the "spirit of the early stories" in I. Asimov's Foundation Trilogy "deteminedly anti-deterministic."
