E.T. as robot.[1] See for the hardware: credits indicate that much of the robotic material is really done with (presumably industrial variety) robots. Real robots were used even more in the sequel, SHORT CIRCUIT 2 (q.v.).
Note in SHORT CIRCUIT the line "Number Five is alive" and in the sequel the attempted murder of the robot.[2]
