Gigliotti, Davidson. "The Allure of the Electronic: The Changing Vocabulary of Video Sculpture." Afterimage 17 (March 1990): 12-17.

Discusses the exhibition Video Skulptur retrospectiv und aktuell 1963-1989 mounted at the DuMont Kunsthalle, Cologne—an international survey of video art. Relevant works include some early interactive pieces, like those of Bruce Nauman and Les Levine, that conjure images of surveillance and more recent pieces dealing with the history and implications of communicating visually. The latter group includes Fabrizio Plessi's Materia prima, which compares disconnected video monitors with marble slabs as potential carriers of information, and Nam June Paik's VV-W, a huge double-sided pyramid of monitors which seductively combine the light with subliminal images.
