McGarth, Thomas. The Gates of Ivory, The Gates of Horn. 1957. Chicago: Another Chicago P, 1987.

A McCarthy-Era allegory relevant here for suggesting "a total machine society" where the Sociological Engineers have as an axiom, "Man is an appendage to the machine" (71)—but where the most significant machine is the apparatus of the State. Cf. F. Kafka's The Trial (1925) — plus Kafka's "In the Penal Colony" and K. Vonnegut's Player Piano (both cited in this Category).
