Merritt, Abraham. "The Metal Monster." Argosy 1920. Rpt. as novel, New York: Avon, 1946. Westport, CT: Hyperion, 1974.

Lost-world story featuring an Asian city that is a unified, conscious, "living Thing" (quoted in Wolfe 190).[[1]] The inhabitants of the city resemble robots; travelers who enter the Metal Monster's kingdom "are affected by the mechanical being and begin to experience the harmonies of the geometric consciousness." See under Literary Criticism the TMG essay by L. Heldreth 139.[[2]]
