Useful survey of SF cities, both eutopian and dystopian (but mostly dystopian) from the London of H. G. Wells's When the Sleeper Wakes (1899), through the San Francisco of John Shirley's City Come A-Walkin' (1980). See for T. von Harbou's novel, Metropolis (q.v. under Fiction) — but be skeptical of JD's handling of Es Toch in Ursula K. Le Guin's City of Illusions. See for the close relationship of cities and machines.
