See esp. chs. 4-6, with the Army of Mars. Except for its real leaders, this army is totally "mechanized" (our word): turned into obedient, radio-controlled human robots. KV literalizes the common metaphor of an army (the prototypical bureaucracy) as a human machine. (See under Background, L. Mumford, "Utopia, The City and The Machine.")
